Taking over pool care

I was thinking of the Effects of Adding Chemicals. That has a drop down box for bleach selection.

So,yes, just enter the 10.5. Still an odd concentration ---------

Not true. Water temperature and high FC does degrade CYA. Not quickly. But over time you can see 5-10 ppm loss per month if your water temperatures are high enough. Elevated FC increases that.

Degradation of Cyanuric Acid (CYA))

Spas/hot tubs see rapid degradation of CYA levels due to hot water.

Take care.

Good to know, thanks. I guess the stuff that says "the best way to reduce CYA is drain" doesn't necessarily mean it's the ONLY way, just the only practical way.

From that post it looks like it would take at least a year to get from 140 to a reasonable amount without draining.

Yep. There is a solar cover in the works, but I’m going to be super attentive to keeping the FC levels on the high end of the range and brushing several times a week, because if algae gets started I am going to drain and fill so I can SLAM. The parents will just have to deal with it.

Now there's someone taking the bull by the horns. I'd be shocked (HA) if your pool doesn't turn green sooner rather than later.

Ok so I did the CYA diluted test today about 5 minutes ago. Back to the sun, fill to 50 mark, can see the dot, fill to 60 mark, can’t see the dot. Did this 3 times pouring test mixture. So yay, my CYA is a bit lower than I thought at 120.

my initial cya numbers may have been a bit off due to time of day and inexperience.

we’ve had some rain and some splash out which may have affected it as well.

FC 16.5
CC 0
pH 7.5
TA 120
CH 230 at last test
CYA 120

Water is clear and will probably do a deep clean on the sand filter. Got permission from the pool owner (dad)

I have some organic staining I want to take care of. Suggestions?

Maintain your FC at or above 20% of your CYA for awhile. Brush the stain areas frequently. They should fade.

With your high CYA, I would wait until winter when you hopefully will drain and get the CYA down to 40 ppm or so.

After reading some more, I’m planning on doing a deep clean on the sand filter soon.

im also considering adding the DE to the sand filter. Does it really make a noticible difference?

I always had a DE filter and crystal clear water, but we recently moved and this pool has a sand filter. The water was balanced well but it still looked a little "dull". I started adding a little DE and our water has been *Sparkling* ever since.

One question, if the "queen" will only allow a drain if it turns green, why not reduce your FC and let it turn green, drain and SLAM? The money you're spending on chlorine to keep the FC up with the high CYA would be better spent on a SLAM at a lower CYA as well as savings afterward? Just a thought!

the grief I would get from letting the pool turn green isn’t worth it. And it’s their money being spent, not mine. They’ve had trouble with cloudy water, and green water and the pool guy never getting it right. Now that the pool is under my care with the TFPC system the water looks wonderful and they don’t want me to drain and fill. They don’t care that the cya is high.

Also the pool is using 1-2ppm per day, so net chlorine usage is the same as it would be at 50ppm CYA. If I need to SLAM at some point I will drain and fill, but until then the pool is clean and clear and as long as I maintain sufficient FC relative to the CYA level it should stay clean and clear.

My CYA is too high to SLAM as well (80). Ive been having trouble keeping FC up. The pool store owner asked me a good question, "How does the pool look? It looks great. OK, just us liquid chlorine until as CYA drops."
