Does anyone here use ambient lighting in their yards? I think it looks so nice to look at. Some options I'm considering are solar lights, string lighting with Edison bulbs going around the pool, christmas lights around the deck columns, step riser lights (although those would require an electrician) and tiki torches. Anyone use any of these?

I have low voltage lighting run all over my back yard. It runs off of a timed controller that is just plugged into an outlet behind the grill. No electrician needed, you simply run a large spool of wire (looks like speaker cable) where ever you need lights and then each light snaps onto the line. Controller would be something like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IOZ881...&pd_rd_r=b60e3481-9014-11e8-bdf3-a194229cc61a

Then you can get the cable and lights from Home Depot or Lowes or what not.

oh wow, those are the ones I'm looking at! I do have a place for them. Do you have them? I've read that they are almost too bright though and need to be dimmed.

Yes we have one 50' set. Some of the colors are bright, there are 16 colors and all have 9 levels of dimming. So you can have your choice. We do have ours on a photo cell timer, and the lights remember their last setting, so very nice set of lights but for the price.

I have the string lights plugged into an exterior smart outlet. I also have a smart outlet on a light inside. Both work from my phone. A VERY small smart home installation.

Watching this thread since we have lights to hang and thoughts re: landscape lighting.
Thanks for all the ideas. We are trying to figure out where to hangs lights overhead but don't have pergola or porch overhang to do it. :?:

Q: can solar rope lights be hung from under the outside of top rails of an AGP without concern of electricity next to water?

+1

If you want to do it just once, and have recently won some money, use Volt instead of, well, anything else. They are the best. Solid brass!

They sell every kind of landscape light.

Regardless of brand, the trick is hiding the bulb. Walkway lighting, with a hood, provides some subtle ambient light on the ground. Though depending on placement, you can see the bulb while in the pool, looking up, and if they're close enough to the water, in the reflection in the water. These guys:

What I like most in my yard are my up-lights. The Volt up-lights have little hoods to help direct the light and hide the bulb. I shine them up into large shrubs and trees. They light up the trees, kinda from the inside out, which looks awesome, and the trees shed a very subtle ambient light back to the deck and yard. These:

Volt lights are not cheap. But like I said, they'll be the last you buy. They sell kits that include everything you need, that offer a little discount.
