I have low voltage lighting run all over my back yard. It runs off of a timed controller that is just plugged into an outlet behind the grill. No electrician needed, you simply run a large spool of wire (looks like speaker cable) where ever you need lights and then each light snaps onto the line. Controller would be something like this:

Then you can get the cable and lights from Home Depot or Lowes or what not.

Regardless of brand, the trick is hiding the bulb. Walkway lighting, with a hood, provides some subtle ambient light on the ground. Though depending on placement, you can see the bulb while in the pool, looking up, and if they're close enough to the water, in the reflection in the water. These guys:
What I like most in my yard are my up-lights. The Volt up-lights have little hoods to help direct the light and hide the bulb. I shine them up into large shrubs and trees.
