Good morning! I have a question. We opened the pool 2 weeks ago, we did the SLAM thing for about 6 days. Pool is clear and all of our levels are right where they should be. I am wondering if I didn't finish the slam the way we should have. There is still some dead algea in the deep end on the sides and then when we brush it goes in a poof cloud and then collects in the shallow end by the return pump. Is that normal or should we have kept in slam until that didn't happen anymore? There isn't much but its there. Should we vaccum that dead algea to waste or through the filter? Our levels are good I just didn't want to take the chance of screwing up the chemistry. Should we do another couple of days of SLAM? I am afraid of dealing with algea again but have consistently maintained our FC level at 5. Thank you in advance and if you need more information please let me know. I am not the best at explaining pool stuff.

If your CC is above 0.5 ppm SLAM it anyways until CC passes, and patches of algae get neutralized and filtered out. CC and OCLT, including your visuals of water quality is usually used as a numbers gauge if your water chemistry is running away from you with contaminants.

CYA - 10 ( I am not sure what happened here we were at 30 but have backwashed the filter quite a bit so I do wonder if that got rid of the stabalizer)

Hi Maddie! There was a ton of algea before the SLAM, I'm thinking this might be stuff that was missed but I'm just not sure.

There is no way to measure 10ppm CYA. You need to get 30 ppm CYA in the pool water.
Read the SLAM Process article. Did you pass all three criteria? Crystal clear water means no dead algae in the pool.

Thank you for the advice! SLAM in process now, no dead algea left at all. Will do the OCLT tonight and hope it holds.

Very cloudy. I would not bother with a OCLT. Your pool water should be clear before you do one.

Ok, we will keep going with the SLAM until its clearer. We did add CYA in the sock, I will wait until tomorrow to test for that. I feel like it's getting so close
Increased the FC level for SLAM. Did a CYA test this morning and its now at 50. I was slamming based off of 30 so I upped the FC levels. I feel like I am doing something wrong. I vaccum the whole pool (to filter) very slowly. Then I brush every single surface. Let it settle and vaccum again very slowly until there is not one single thing left anywhere. I wake up and its almost like half of everything I vaccumed is sitting in the shallow end. We backwash the pump each time I vaccum. Should I vaccum to waste instead of filter?
Vacuum to waste is preferable as long as you can replace water easily as needed.
Also don't backwash until your filter pressure rises 20-25%, as a slightly dirty filter actually cleans better.

Oh wow! I did not know that, thank you so much for the tip. I will vaccum to waste and see if that helps.
I think we are finally ready to do the overnight chlorine test tonight. FC has held at slam level, no debris that we can see and it is definitely not cloudy like it was yesterday. Hopin and prayin!!
