2 Speed Pool Pump Recommendations

I currently have a Hayward 1 Hp pump on my inground pool. It is working fine but I thought I would do some research in the cost saving of a 2 speed pump. My question is do I look at a 1hp two speed pump or do I go a little higher? My plumbing is 1 1/2 inch for a 17,000 gallon pool. Also is there a different way to wire the pump. I have always changed out my pumps myself and find that is a simple thing to do. Also this may be a stupid question but can you just upgrade the motor?

Save yourself a lot of time and money and just replace the motor on your current pump with a two speed.

What is the model line of the pump (e.g. MaxFlo)?

Ditto on motor replacement, especially if you have a 115V system. You can't find a decent 2 speed pump in 115V anymore, but you can get motors. If 1HP has been enough, and enough for vacuuming, you could stick with that and get a 1HP 2 speed. Get one with a switch in the end if needed. I'd get a new impeller and install kit aka "go kit" as well. I have a 1.5HP on my 24000 gal pool and it's PLENTY of power.

The frame should be listed on the motor name plate. But I believe it is a 56J. What you want is the STS1072.

If the pump is currently wired to a dual breaker, then it is 230v. But you can confirm at the pump with a volt meter too.

Thanks for all of the info. I know now that I should buy a 2 speed motor. With a 56J mounting flange. I know that I am wired at 220. I like the model motor STS1072. I guess my last question would be how do you switch speeds? Use a toggle or a Timer. And where do you get those?

Thanks Again

Use a toggle or a Timer. And where do you get those?
Either. Sometimes you can ask the seller of the motor if they have one with a switch in the back of the motor. Sometimes they do.

Otherwise, you can get a two speed timer. Do you already have a timer for on/off?

Your pump is an up rated pump. A 3/4 HP full rated motor is the same size as a 1 HP up rated motor. To check multiply the label HP by the service factor (THP). The new motor THP should be at least as large as the old motor THP.
