First time post, I'm struggling to raise my total alkalinity. It is measuring 40. I added 4 cups of sodium bicarbonate this morning, TA was 30.

Well..it sounds like 4 "cups" is raising you 10 points. Another 8 should take you to 60 which is a good place to start.

You can add that all at once. You might want to check poolmath link at top of page to help you calculate how much you need in oz (instead of cups)to get to your target.

Just throw it in all at once. TA isn't real critical if you overshoot a little. You don't even have to wait to swim -- it's just baking soda. People brush their teeth with it!
Thanks guys. I've been using PoolMath, but am just getting comfortable with big adds.
+1 to what Richard said. It's baking soda. It also mixes fairly quickly. Have no fear of that addition to the pool.
I love freaking people out by sticking my finger in the sodium bicarbonate and then licking it, looking at them and say "yep, it's pure."
Yep, it is the safest chemical you add to your pool. Most everything else you want to be a bit more careful to not overshoot, things like acid or chlorine especially, but baking soda is baking soda.
