Hi everyone! Anyone have experience with Sydney Peak coping? We are having it installed next week as part of our pool remodel and the PB just dropped a pallet off. This stuff has rust all over it. Should I be worried about it staining the new white quartz plaster that they are going to install? Also, it flakes a bit so I am not sure if it is suitable for a SWG. The masonry guy said that it will be fine with salt and won't need to be sealed. Any thoughts?

I don't mean to be alarmist, but if I had anything to do over, it would be picking stone that showed zero signs of flaking. I sincerely regret not examining this more closely and hate the flaky stone we do have mixed into the deck and coping. Hate is not strong enough a word actually, so do be sure about it.
Opinions vary about salt pools and stone, so mine is just another one. If it's prone to flaking, it will do so no matter what.
As for the color bleeding, I dont know, but if it does on the pallet I might be wary. Could it be residual mud and dirt bleeding the color? I would be sure before I put it in, especially with the flaking.

Hello Patrick - thanks for the response. I was afraid of that and will definitely have to get some information from the masonry team today. I am hoping a PB wouldn't offer a coping option that isn't good around pools!
Rust could be from the pallets or wire used to hold the rock on the pallet. I would definitely rinse it off and then wet it periodically to see how it behaves. Ascorbic acid will remove iron stains from rocks or plaster.
Flaking and SWG are pretty much unrelated. It is a conspiracy theory that PBs use to avoid warranty claims. The stone is flaking now and hasn't ever been near a saltwater pool. We have some flag that flakes and some that doesn't after 5 swim seasons. We also have flaky flagstone on paths nowhere near the pool. Fortunately, the flaky flagstone in our coping has gotten better, not worse. For the most part it shed some layers and settled down. We have very little issue with it now. It is easy to tell which flagstone flakes and which doesn't just by looking at it.
So, I guess I could start a new conspiracy that installing flaky flagstone around my saltwater pool actually cured my flagstone issues.

Just be sure for yourself. He might not be paying enough attention. Mine didn't, and the pallets were apparently very mixed in type of content. It's only too late once they set in Mortar.

also flaking, at least with pa blue is so hit and miss. some flakes some doesn't. no way of knowing. best way of preventing it is to have in under cover, but obviously that isnt's possible wit ha pool. lol
this is the main reason i didn't go natural for our upcoming build.
regarding the rust thing. . . see if you can get a hold of the place it came out of. they will tell you if it has a higher iron content and might stain. i know i was warned about natural stone that is around plaster and has the possibility to stain due to iron content.

Yankeefan, I was wondering what you ended up using here and how it turned out? Our pool builder has recommended the Sydney Peak ledger stone for our 30 ft. raised wall. But after reading this and Patrick's comments I am confused...
We had the stone installed and I am happy with it even though there is a higher rust content than I would have liked. The mason said that this is one of the more dense stones and that he wouldn't worry about it with salt systems. We didn't even recommend sealing it as he felt it is hard enough to stand up to anything So Cal throws at it. I haven't come across much flaking but the rust has brightened with the last rains. All in all I like the finished product but haven't installed a salt system yet to test the wear.
Thank you so much for the feedback, I am so glad it's worked out for you, your pool is beautiful! The coping looks great with the water color too. I see the ledger has even more of a rust look and probably more than I am looking for. I like how your stone is more blue/silver with a more subtle rust areas. I would like a bit of rust, but maybe the ledger would be way too much. Wish I could find a pool that has used it in ledger form. Will have to check with my builder since he's suggesting it, I am sure he has used it before. Thanks again for the helpful feedback!
