Newbie Questions--Seeking affirmation/guidance

Congrats! Thanks for supporting TFP!

It could be PH, but I doubt it. It is most likely high CSI. It can make your skin feel dry, itchy and weird. Are you ready to learn something new? If not, read this next week.

Poolmath will give you a CSI number after you enter all your test results. This number is impacted by salt, PH, TA and CH. It is easiest to adjust TA and PH. But, PH needs to stay between 7.2 and 7.8. Also, salt has to be entered in PPM, like 3400, not 3.8. Keep the CSI number in check, I prefer -0.3 to 0. It is good for pools, SWGs and skin. And it will prevent scale build up.

Pooldv is right, running the water features *will* raise the pH, but you MUST run them all at least once a day even for a short while to be assured that the water in those lines is being exposed to your FC. 'k?

Yay for the badge! The gerbils running in the TFP wheel thank you...

I think we're gonna need some party pics on the 4th though ;)

pooldv, Thanks for this--DEFINITELY NEW!!! Okay, so I entered my most recent set of test results at pool math, being sure to enter the salt w/o decimals. CSI is .23.

BUT until we can get a valid pH reading. . . we're STUCK on all of it. . .Right????

Cloudy today, so chlorine loss will go slowly, I'm afraid. . .

Do you guys think I should consider adding hydrogen peroxide to "help" that chlorine come down some more? I'm surprised by how my pH still reads between 7.5 & 7.8 WITH the high FC levels. I completely distrust that. . . And again with the itchy skin. . . REALLY want people to be comfortable tomorrow. . .

We drained about 6" last night, and harvested quite a bit of rainwater to help get back to full. . .

And, YippeeSkippee--I'll try to getchya some pics! :)

OH--and the test results:
FC=25
TC=0
CH--I think I did something wrong with this test and need to redo it. Is it one that's impacted by high chlorine??? (need to go look at the extended directions).
TA=190
CYA=120
CSI=.23

I'm a little baffled by the complaint of itchy skin, etc because theoretically your high cya should be shielding the chlorine from being so "strong" feeling. Is it just you feeling this or does anyone else too?

I've used hydrogen peroxide before in my hot tub to lower chlorine, and if I recall correctly its an equal amount of H2O2 to lower as it took to raise it via chlorine. I've copied the following that ChemGeek wrote in 2011-

So to neutralize 10 ppm FC in 10,000 gallons, it would take around 26 cups (1.6 gallons) of 3% hydrogen peroxide in 10,000 gallons or about 1 cup in 350 gallons. You can get stronger hydrogen peroxide for the pool, though usually one just uses sodium thiosulfate instead at a rough rate of 2.6 ounces weight of sodium thiosulfate to lower 1 ppm FC in 10,000 gallons.

I hope this is helpful?

It IS helpful... I also don't think it's the chlorine--I suspect pH... But I can't test it with the chlorine so high... Kids have been swimming, they report their eyes feel good open under water, but their skin is itchy when they get out... Chlorine is down quite a bit from when I was it--I need to get in, too--but crazy with party prep, lol! Do you think just leave it alone???

OMG I can't believe that one bizarre solution to too high chlorine would be to tell one of the boys to pee in the pool!! LOL LOL

If you want to drain some more water it would help, as would the H2O2 and of course some sun... with that many people in the pool tomorrow the chlorine will actually be depleted downwards so my real advice is to grab an adult bev and relax. You're gonna have a great day :)

What?!? Who is in charge? +1 to relaxing with a bev!

Lol!!! You guys crack me up!!!!! Okay! I'm all about that beverage as soon as we get back from making the firework haul! Can't thank you both enough....
