New House with Salt Water System - Need chemical help!

Ok, After a long break, the pool is almost completely full, and the last test I ran a few minutes ago has my CYA at just above 60.

Should I run all the other tests again to see what the levels are with the newly added water?

Here's the test results (Hopefully I did everything correctly). I will include what the pool store results were as well.

Free Chlorine: Still 0

Previous Result: Did not turn pink at all


CYA: ~60

Previous Result: 150+


Alkalinity: 70

Previous Result: Red Right Away


pH: 7.8

Previous Result: Looked just under 6.8

Quick question. When I looked up Muriatic Acid on the Lowe's website, it was saying that it is not Compatible with Salt Pools. What should I do here? I do not have the saltwater system running yet, obviously.

Muriatic acid should be Muriatic acid, just get the stuff that is 31.45% HCl (hydrochloric acid)

Another dumb question... How can I tell how much chlorine its in a bottle of bleach. I'm not seeing anything on the bottle to indicate that.

Usually it shows a percentage, for bleach it is often 5%, 6%, or 8.25% "sodium hypochlorite", then you plug that into the poolcalculator.com to get how much you need to add. What brand of bleach and what size bottle?

Roughly how long should I wait after applying the acid?

30 minutes or so with the pump on should be plenty.

I will admit to doing it much less than that though ........ never want to mix the acid and the bleach.

Bleach was purchased, and poured in after confirming pH level was at 7.4. I can't view the shock school thing at the moment, but I assume it has all the info in there about how long to wait now and all that?

Welp, time to do the shocking process, make sure to lower your ph down to ~7.4 before you start.

Click on the link in this quote above. You need to maintain your FC shock level the whole time, so unfortunately, just waiting isn't going to do it. You'll probably need to test and dose several times per day at first.

So during the shocking process, I notice the jets stop at times. It's this when I nerd to back wash? I noticed doing that clears up the jets.

Second, should I be vacuuming anything, or should I let the pump just do its thing?

Your psi gauge should tell you when to backwash.....25% rise.

Vacuuming is an essential part of the shock process.

Are you reading and following the Shock Process as outlined up in Pool School?

It said to brush once a day, wasnt sure if that also meant vacuum.
