Low chlorine/No free chlorine

yes.....draining only to lower CYA. Remember that CYA doesn't get consumed. Once it is added, it stays (except for rare set of circumstances). Once you reach your target CYA....leave it alone. And by "leave it alone" that means be mindful of not using the chlorine products that also contain CYA (as I think you found out). Stick with bleach and hopefully be able to get back to just SWG to maintain CL levels once SLAM process is complete.

You will reduce the accuracy, so it is no good for the OCLT when the drop is close to 1ppm, but you can use a 5 ml sample, then each drop of the R-0871 is 1 ppm. The amount of R-0870 can be a level scoop at that volume.

This seems to come up every few days. 5ml of water would make each drop count as 1ppm ... this is ok if you are just working at maintaining high FC for the SLAM process, but not enough accuracy to verify if you have finished the SLAM process.

You may be able to get away with only 1 scoop of powder instead to 2 ... just be sure you start with a good deep pink color and you "should" be fine.

I assume you have already ordered refills???

That's not true. Whether you have undissolved granules is irrelevant. That's just a side effect of having some clumped granules. If they were fresh or ground well they would fully dissolve. You want to add enough powder so that the color transition at the end from pink/red to clear is distinct. Usually one level one scoop is enough for a 10 ml sample and two for a 25 ml sample. If you see a flash of pink that turns clear when you add the powder, then the FC is high so add more powder to get a color. If you add powder and the color is faint but you know you've got chlorine in the water, you can add more and it won't hurt.

If there is too little powder, then the color can be too weak so when you get to the end you'll stop too short in the test so measure artificially too low.

Agreed. You shouldn't need to test CYA for a while UNLESS you were to had a stabilized chlorine product instead of bleach which we know you won't do again

Your on your way to a much more troublefree pool. With the SWG you'll be surprised how easy it is to maintain now that you are understanding your CYA/free chorine relationship. I promise.
