    Adding Borates?

I would turn your pump on high and broadcast 2 equal batches around your pool. I would brush your pool between batches. Boric acid dissolves very quickly! HTH Tony

Where do I start? Refilling my pool now....

Nice pool! I think it looks pretty good! The stain may lighten up with chlorine. It would be nice to see a picture of the equipment pad. A close up of the filter and the pump would be great!

Where do I start? Refilling my pool now....

That will work great! See instructions below: 1. Go to Wal-mart and purchase 2 4lb jugs of Stabilizer (should list Cyanuric acid as the main ingredient - 99%) 2. Purchase 15 - 20 Gallons of Pool Chlorinating Liquid (pool Section - 10% bleach) or Great Value Plain bleach (8.5% Bleach) (do not...

High CYA, starting over, ditching the pool companies!

Test strips are called guess strips in these parts, so take the results with a grain of salt. I would continue to follow Richards advice, two jugs of chlorine per day, until your kit comes in! Brush and vacuum the pool as well...adding all that chlorine maybe a waste.

Where do I start? Refilling my pool now....

Will the previous owner add bleach to the pool until Wednesday? If yes, I will give you a plan to get the pool ready for Thursday when you get back to the house. If not, we will work around that problem! What test kit did you order and when will it arrive? Please fill out your signature so we...

    Frequency of CYA addition

I would think that adding 20 ppm a month would be a bit much...but with extra splash out/backwashing and heavy thunderstorms may be causing the decrease, hopefully it is just temporary. Can you provide us with your latest test battery?

    Need Some Help

You need to keep up the SLAM...Cloudy water tells me you are not finished SLAMMING. How many times a day are you testing your FC and bringing it back up to shock level? I recommend a bare minimum of 3 times a day...the more you test the better! Can you post your last set of results (FC, CC, and...

Do I really need a weekly pool cleaner?

I vote to ditch the pool guy...12 months @ 125.00 will buy you a nice pool robot! You can brush the pool once a week and the experts on this forum will help you with the equipment! Get yourself a good test kit and start asking questions! I like the TF-100 with a Speed Stir (tftestkits.net) or...

One of the experts will be along shortly to help get you out of this mess! Gosh, it sounds like a nightmare, so sorry! Can you post a picture? Can you give us some info on the size of your pool (gallons), type of filter, etc? Alum floc needs to be vacuumed to waste, I'm almost certain...

Where do I start? Refilling my pool now....

Can you stop him? You don't need the pool store...all you need is bleach, CYA, acid and maybe Trichlor pucks! You really need a good test kit, our methods require you have a Taylor 2006C or the TF-100! That should be your first priority, get one ordered now! The Pool Store will sell him a bunch...

Pool newbie -- Friend with pool allergy

My advice, stop taking advice from the pool store, and listen to the experts here! Pucks add FC, CYA and acid to your pool and I would only use them when going on vacation. I would use bleach (Walmart Great Value), bleach with a Stenner pump, or a SWG and never have a pH or CYA problem again...

Pool newbie -- Friend with pool allergy

I would HIGHLY suggest that your friend see an allergist/dermatologist to diagnosis her problem...Just for kicks, you should perform an OCLT and make sure you are losing 1 ppm or less of FC overnight. If you pass the OCLT, your CC's are 0.5 or less and your pool is crystal clear, there is not...

Pool newbie -- Friend with pool allergy

Chlorine is chlorine is chlorine: 2 NaCl(aq) + 2 H2O(l) ----> 2 Na+(aq) + 2 OH-(aq) + H2(g) + Cl2(g) Salt Water systems are chlorine generators. Lots of TFP users maintain them without issue... I see your CYA is 80 (round up from 75) your minimum FC should be 6 not 3.5. You should keep your...

Where do I start? Refilling my pool now....

Welcome to TFP! First you are going to need a good test kit, such as the TF-100 (tftestkits.net) or the Taylor K2006C (amazon). I prefer the TF-100 with a Speed Stir (makes testing much easier/better accuracy and precision). You are going to need to stock up on bleach (several gallons)...

    Want to convert to TFPC

I have the Dolphin DX5 Plus and I use it up to Shock level for my CYA...Three years and still going strong! Your mileage may vary... Cost of chlorine and extra reagent cost...If you are going over by 1 or 2 ppm I would not be concerned. Way over could damage equipment/bleach liner. The Speed...

    No CYA, Foggy Pool

I'm pretty certain you are experiencing a bacterial bloom (cloudy pool). The bacteria causing the bloom is converting your CYA to ammonia (your ammonia test results = positive). I would remove the pucks and follow mknauss initial post! DO NOT add CYA! CYA is essentially food for the bacteria.

Texas sun burning 3 FC per day

I'm calculating about 1/2 jug of 8.5% bleach for 3 ppm. Maybe your pool size is incorrect? You could also consider a Stenner pump to inject your daily FC. It is cheaper than the SWG and it is an easy DIY. HTH

Does stale bleach still register in chlorine tests?

Moon thirsty - 1. Listen to jblizzle...he is a pro! 2. DO NOT use the pool calculator! Please use Pool Math on this site. 3. Phosphates are hogwash, pure and simple! 4. Trust your results from the TF-100, not the pool store results! 5. Check the dates on the bleach, if stored properly they...
