All pools need circulation. You will want the clean fresh return water to not immediately dump into a skimmer. A pool that size will need 4 returns at minimum. I am not a pro though, others may have better insight.

I closed the skimmer off for the majority of the start up time this week on my pool, you should be less worried about floating surface debris and concentrate on those drains, switch back and forth if needed to clear surface debris.
