    Some advice for New Guy

I wonder if it really is mustard algae as you said the spots were brown. I have never experienced any algae so I couldn't say either way. Pools school says it is usually yellow or greenish in color. Keep at it and you will get it.

    Warning About Walmart Liquid Chlorine

I have the paranoia after reading this post too. I was sniffing my bottles and thought they had no smell and was like dam it. I didn't do a pre test but blindly added 24 oz of it then tested about an hour later and was at 8 FC so think I am good. Can it not have a strong "bleach" smell but still...

Pretty sure rule of thumb is anything below SLAM for your CYA is safe to swim.

    Some advice for New Guy

Sounds like you are the right track. Don't get discouraged keep on trucking and you will get lots of help here. On a side note I found the CYA test the hardest to do. I would alway doubt if I could see the dot or not.

Is it suggested to SLAM when opening?

Opened my pool 2 weeks ago. It was crystal clear vacuumed the 1 million spiders and very little debris from the bottom. My first test results were: FC 11 CC 0 CYA 50 TA 80 PH 7.2 I added some borax for PH and tested and vacuumed again 13 days later. Results were: FC 2 CC 0 PH 7.5 I added some...

    dropped pvc pipe into skimmer

Electrical snake would work. The copper wire hook may open up to easy if the pipe is slightly snug. Good luck

What do you to maintain correct levels?

My only suggestion is to be very careful with the pucks. They will raise your CYA. Once that CYA gets too high there is no way to lower it without draining water. It will also lead to a higher FC needed to keep your pool sanitized. Post your latest CYA and they can tell you the best way to go...

Drain vs cleaning up my swamp each year

Just a thought but extend your season by a month in the beginning and the end. Even if nobody is swimming it's nice to be ready for that random hot day. It's way easier to get it up and running before stuff starts growing in the warmer water.

    Pump Runtime

Really depends on trees in the area and bugs in the area. Things like that I get very few leaves in my pool. I run mine 4 hrs total.2 hours in the morning to grab any bugs from the overnight before the kids go in the afternoon. Then 2 hours at night so I can test and add chemicals. It really...

Need to add 111 oz (by wt.) baking soda -- seems like a lot.

Recommended levels for vinyl pools is 50-90+. This is per the chart in pool school. Pool School - Recommended Levels How is your PH pretty stable? If the PH is stable I would think there is not a need to adjust your TA. Maybe I am missing something?

Bonding pool - Run it back to the panel or just between them?

It should run all the way around the pool try and keep it like a foot off the wall. If there is any metal like the bottom rail you should try and hit that in four spots equally around the pool. It should also hit the heater pool water and pump motor. The water is done by a skimmer kit or a...

Making some upgrades this year to my 18x34 Doughboy

My sucks in a small amount of but never enough to run dry. By the time I am done vacumming just the small handle bump on the skimmer cover has air in it. Weird that we have such different experience with it. Ever try and contact doughboy about it?

Not sure where in New England you are but we have Ocean State Job Lot here in Mass. They usually have liquid shock 12.5% there. Might be worth a shot for you.

    Am I Done SLAMing?

Are you pulling the test sample after the pump has been running at least 30 mins in the AM? I also had some result issues in the past and found out I was not using enough powder for the test. I now use a good heaping spoon and it seemed to help.

    Am I Done SLAMing?

I am by no means an expert here. My experience with MY pool is sometimes rain and over cast days have raised my CC just slightly to 1 before. I would say the OCLT passing means there is no consumption of FC and you should be good. Also I don't have a speed stir YET. I place my test cylinder on...

    Another bonding question

You can take or leave the ground rod your choice. I also wouldn't be to concerned with corrosion. Be sure the lugs you use have an CU stamp on them and your good. No need for anti corrosion goo. Also I know here in mass the bonding conductor is one solid piece not tapping off. Hope that helps...

    confusing results pool calc check

Took that advise Doc and walked around in the pool with a tape measure today. My depth goes from 46" in one deep spot to 44" in a shallower spot. Average of 45" inches of most the pool. That is an 800 gallon difference. Not huge put still a difference. Thanks

    confusing results pool calc check

testing this AM: FC 12.5 CC .5 Looks like I am good. Should I stop being so paranoid when CC are up on any given 1 day? Should I trust what I see more than the tests? Like cloudy rainy days causing higher CC or crystal clear water with no slimy feelings and no chlorine smell? I mean i read here...

Added 86oz of 10% bleach to get to FC 10 let the filter run 45 mins and over shot again Now FC 13 CC .5 We will see what the AM brings. On a side note I have a DE filter and haven't seen any pressure increase yet this year. Just a theory but what if the organics are in the DE? The water...
