    First time Pool Owner

most any balancer should do, but I'm also a newbie to pool care so I wasn't being as specific in these other chemicals I had to put in other than liquid chlorine. Use Pool Math to determine how much is needed to bring CYA up to 30. Note: My 30 is from what is a good level for my chlorine vinyl...

Just starting the process in Northern Indiana - what are your "must haves" in a pool?

Re: Just starting the process in Northern Indiana - what are your "must haves" in a p Hello fellow northern Indiana neighbor, I'm just a long stones throw from you over in south bend! I have only come into ownership of a pool in the past 5 months, but having the opportunity to build your own...

Trouble with CYA test - water remains clear

I did something similar... My CYA was <20 and I had extra tabs (maybe 12-15 3" tabs) so I used them up. Then retested after about a week or so after using the last ones and it wasn't as significant a change... Maybe 20 instead of <20. But now that those are gone, I do ha e dedicated CYA and...

New house, New-to-me pool, new adventure!

With all respect and prayers for those affected by this system in Louisiana... We officially broke the record for a single day of rainfall in our recorded history coming in at just shy of 6.75". Had to do a drain a third time and turned it off about an inch above halfway above skimmer, rain has...

New house, New-to-me pool, new adventure!

I do and I was using it because there is a low spot where the concrete has sunk ever so slightly next to the rear garage entry door... It tends to pool (pun intended!) there. This rain is very stressful... For reasons outside of the pool, but I am keeping an eye on it closely. It's going to be...

New house, New-to-me pool, new adventure!

Well I get my first OMG moment of the fear and nervousness of a heavy rain and overflowing pool. it's been raining pretty hard and steady for about 8 hours now here in Indiana... And I come home nervously to no longer see the inlet of the skimmer... Turn on pump to waste for a bit, and turn it...

Trouble with CYA test - water remains clear

I second this post!! This is what I did (I actually put two socks in one on each return jet) and even kneaded both for about 5 mins each, they were both dissolved in about 20-25 mins.

    New pool owner...first steps

    1) When I had to add stabilizer I used a sock in front of the jets. I took about 15-20 and actually "massaged" the stabilizer to get it to enter the water faster and begin to mix. It still takes a bit to get an accurate reading but otherwise it could take up to a week or so for all of the...

    Hello from New Hampshire

Keep it all in this thread so we (and you) can see your progress. I like to go back at my own intro thread to see the process and how far I've come with my pool... It's actually pretty exciting to see the transformation!

    Hello from New Hampshire

Great! Until you get your test kit, it is typically recommended that you still put a jug of bleach/chlorine in a day to help keep the algae at a standstill. Then once you get your test kit, give us a full rundown of the tests for pH, FC (free chlorine), CC (combined chlorine), TA (total...

    Hello from New Hampshire

Well good thing is I can see the bottom, but there does appear to be a greenish hue to the water. Lots of shade around the pool! That could be to your advantage for preventing chlorine but off by the sun. No worries! We can help you through it! Can you help us understand your maintenance you do...

    Hello from New Hampshire

Welcome! You and I share pool specs for the most part! I also have a 20x40 w/ sand filter! Mine doesn't have as many gallons as yours (28000) but otherwise.... We got you covered for what you need! How about a starter picture for us so we can see what you see! If I need to convince you that TFP...

New house, New-to-me pool, new adventure!

Marian has surpassed 2 months, showing signs of rolling over and keeping her head held high. I am starting to figure out the most feasible process for pool maintenance that I am able to do. Besides kids are in it 3-4 days a week. I still deal with some evidence of algae but I am pretty diligent...

New house, New-to-me pool, new adventure!

Did a full test today... It's not pretty but I know what I need to work on. Ph: 8.2 FC: 1.5ppm CC: 0 CH: 225ppm TA: 180ppm CYA: <20 (was practically clear through whole test, even tested twice) Plan of action is: 1) Lower Ph (PM says 92oz of MA) 2) Add CYA (PM says add 3lbs 9oz.) 3) adjust FC...

New house, New-to-me pool, new adventure!

While not perfect by any means (this pool has seen daylight for literally 3 months in the past 2 years) the water remains clear, just dead algae on the bottom, I do add generally between half to a full jug of chlorine each day. I'm still trying to get a decent schedule for when to filter the...

New house, New-to-me pool, new adventure!

I did keep the FC higher through the party but did let it slip down prior as there were about 11 children swimming about and didn't want FC at shock level still. I guess I never asked if that is bad to have FC at shock level for kids to swim in? I guess it would be more concerned with a high Ph...

New house, New-to-me pool, new adventure!

I'm finding that there's quite the ebb and flow when it comes to needing to maintain the pool and having opportunities to throw pool parties... It's really hard to tell the kids they can't swim because of the (what they call) "allergies" in the pool. Having to be to work earlier than normal...

New house, New-to-me pool, new adventure!

Test this morning came back FC 13ppm and CC 0. I did overshoot a little it asked me to put in 2.2 jugs, but by the time I realized it it was closer to 2.75 jugs. [emoji847]

No, last CYA before FLOC was at 20 but here had since been a few refills from vacuuming to waste. So yes, I will be checking that tomorrow!

New house, New-to-me pool, new adventure!

I actually started the slam this afternoon. I had checked Ph the day prior and it was in between 7.2-7.6 so I called it an even 7.4. So ph may be off due to that. Plus kids got in yesterday and were quite "bubbly" with their movements. [emoji847] I do plan to do CYA as I have an additional 6lbs...

New house, New-to-me pool, new adventure!

Going to test now... Then brush and adjust FC before bed... Stand by. -------Updated-------- FC: 3ppm (was out all day so I expected this) CC: 0 (didn't expect that) Ph: 7.8 TA: 190ppm Didn't test CH as it doesn't seem worthwhile and didn't test CYA due to it being after midnight. [emoji12]

I got the XL kit so I have extra reagents, I didn't run out of the other reagents however so I'm still pretty solid on all that. Will get numbers before bedtime... I'm curious is CC will be elevated at all.

New house, New-to-me pool, new adventure!

I'm thinking take it to shock level.... Just to get it killed. I'll vacuum to waste what's in the pool (most of the visible stuff is in the deep end) and take it to shock level. Then do some brushing to make sure all areas are good and loosened of any algae.

New house, New-to-me pool, new adventure!

I did not check the laterals... The sand level seemed to be at a good level from what I have researched about my specific filter. So the kids got in today and I was in as well. I had brushed the shallow end sediment to the deep end and this time it actually brushed fairly easy. When in there I...

Well, while vacuuming it last time it would easily settle in the bottom and (trying to figure out how to describe it) "looked" like the movement of sand in water.... Picture incoming.
