Lower CYA

The two gallons is just to get some FC in the pool to slow the growth of the (potential) algae.

You can test if your pool has algae...we use this test. Link-->Overnight Chlorine Loss Test

If you have visible algae, no need to do OCLT...time to SLAM.

To clear your pool, you will need to follow this process...Link-->SLAM Process
Print it out, read it three times, keep it in your back pocket. Really helps to have a hard copy with you as questions pop up.

SLAM is a process we use to clear your pool of algae.

To perform the SLAM, you need a test kit that can measure high levels of FC. We also really need an accurate CYA test to know how much FC to add. The drop kit gives us that accuracy. ColorQ can only measure to FC of 10. SLAM level FC with CYA of 40 is 16.

I will try the overnight chlorine test. If the chlorine goes down, I will purchase the correct kit to preform the slam process.

How long should it take for the cloudiness to go away after putting in the liquid chlorine?
A single addition of chlorine likely will not make the cloudiness go away. Possible, but not likely.

The slam process will clean up the pool. Depending on the type of filter and the level of algae, may take a few days.

Can you post a picture of the pool/water?

I have a DE filter. Here are a few pictures of what I think could be algae. I was told it could be stains from metal which I have 0 copper in the pool now and since black algae doesn't grow on vinyl. Just what I was told. Your thoughts?

From picture 1, I would slam this pool. It likely won't take too long. Independent of your OCLT results with the ColorQ, my advice stands. Get a good test kit and get your slam going. If the slam doesn't clear the "algae" in the picture, then we can analyze the stains...

It was clear when I drained the pool 1/2 way down. It didn't get cloudy until after it was almost filled back to regular level. This is the 1st time I used a filter on the garden hose. What test kit do you recommend for me to do the slam?

Your FC got low when you did the drain and algae has started to form...that is the cloudy. Having used the taylor K-2006C and the TF-Pro, I would get the Link--> TF-Pro

Either will work. The smart stir just makes the results super accurate and repeatable.

I should have the kit by Wednesday. Can I start the process now? I checked the chemicals this morning and CYA was at 42. According to the chart, it says to add 6 gallons of liquid chlorine to get level to 16. Can I use test strips for today and tomorrow?

GREAT!!! What kit did you get?

I would not start now. You can add 5ppm of liquid chlorine a day until the test kit arrives. We really don't know your CYA. Had one pool this spring that the pool store tested 80, really was 40.

You could add more chlorine than is necessary and damage your liner. Trust me, we got you. By the end, you will be the master of your pool...will take a few of these pills...LOL

That is the K-1515 FAS-DPD drop test. It is the GOLD standard for FC testing. You still need to be able to test all the other chemicals. The K-1515 is included with the recommended test kits.

As Jim said earlier, he uses the ColorQ for his daily/weekly checks. If no changes from last time, great. If there is a change, he uses his TFPro to check that and only adds chemicals based on the drop test results.

How many gallons of liquid chlorine should I buy to be ready to slam my pool tomorrow when my drop tester comes? I had put 6 gallons in yesterday early afternoon.
Yesterday evening it was
FC 1.76
TC 2.57

This morning
FC .02
TC .64
I am starting to see the bottom.
