You show to have a DE filter. If you backwash it then it needs to be refilled with 80% of the recommended DE capacity. This is not sand. The DE is a protective layer for the filter grids.
Do you have the model number of the filter?

The pressure that the system runs at is specific to your plumbing. The little green and red pointers can be moved to provide you a guide.
When the DE filter is disassembled and throughly cleaned and restarted with the proper amount of DE - then that becomes your CLEAN Filter pressure. The Green pointer would be move to that setting. it may be 10psi, 12psi 15psi, 20 psi, etc. - dependent on your set up.
Then the the RED point is moved to a setting of 25% above the CLEAN setting. So if your CLEAN pressure is 10psi then your RED pointer would be set at 12.5psi (25% above 10psi). When your pressure increases to 12.5psi then it is time to backwash your DE filter.

Hope this helps understand the role of the pressure gauge on the filter. The GREEN and RED pointers just provide a visual indicator of monitoring your pressure. The higher the pressure increases, the more difficult it is for water to flow which reduces the output to the pool.

Also remember that the pressure is also dependent of the speed of the pump. So you always need to monitor it at the same speed. So if you normally run your pump at 1500rpm then set your RED and GREEN pointers based on that speed. However, if you increase your speed to 3000rpm for a short time, then expect the pressure to increase.

The picture you posted above shows a DE filter. It does not take sand.

If you backwash a DE filter you must add new DE to it.

Show us pictures of your equipment pad and the filter and valves.

Just tried to run the spa heater and it shut off on LO pressure so I’m sure the filter is dirty .

So I’ve seen the videos online on cleaning the filters by stripping down and washing with a garden hose as one option or the other option is to back wash the filter both to what I understand need 2 lbs of DF sand added at the skimmer after rinsing the filter. Do both options clean the filter?

Also can I put the hose into the plants or will it be more than a couple of Home Depot buckets of waste

Have you read DE Filter Use and Care - Further Reading ?

Hosing off the grids will do a more through cleaning then a backwash. Ususally a backwash and refill with DE is adequate for getting the filter clean and a full grid cleaning can be done once or twice a year.

DE is not sand. Use pool grade DE in the filter.

Refer to the labels on the filter or the filter manual for the DE capacity of the filter. With a backwash you add 80% of the DE capacity.

A backwash flows a lot of water out you need to dispose of.

Ok I’ll not refer to as sand is there a way to calculate my size of filter and how much DE to add once cleaned. Is it only on the filter where I can see how much DE

I also have access to my toilet drain cover outside but am concerned about blocking

Find the filter manual on the net and it will give you the dimensions of the different models. Measure your filter and match it up to determine the model and thus the amount of DE needed.

Thanks for sharing the how to guide this is from the guide so assuming I get it correct I take the width X length for area X by 8

  • For hayward grid filters simply divide the filter's area in sq feet by 8 to get the # of lbs DE to add when filter is fully clean. For the bump filters it's not as linear (but is still very easy). All the models start "EC-'XY' (ie EC-50 - X=5, Y=0), use X as the # of lbs DE to add to a fully clean unit.[5]
  • Other manufacturers have the owners add an extra 1/2 lb for clean start up

Hi I’m not sure of the filter inside so will have to wait till I crack it open
