Zodiac DC33 cleaner: cannot open cartridge

New pool owner (bought a house with a pool) here. It came with a Zodiac DC33 cleaner, which worked well until recently. It stopped working and I noticed a small tear in the diaphragm. No problem, I'll just open it up and replace it. Problem is, to get the diaphragm cartridge out, you have to unscrew this cap off, however it appears to be completely stuck and I am unable to remove it. I've tried rubber gloves, heating it up, freezing it, but it just won't budge. I don't have a lot of tools for something like this. I have a friend with channel locks, but this stuff is plastic and I'm afraid it could break it.

Has anyone had this issue before? Any tips to loosen and unscrew this part so we can simply replace the diaphragm instead of having to buy a new cleaner?
