Winter Cover Options for 24' AGP

While some have opened their pool, are in the process, or will be, I will be looking to recover mine when I return home in 2 weeks for 2 weeks. I’ve been traveling a lot for the past few years and am not home to attend to the pool like I would like to be. Therefore, over the past three seasons my winter cover has ripped in the middle of winter, causing it to be a complete mess by the time summer arrives. This may be my fault as I was purchasing covers from eBay to save a few bucks. I would normally close my pool with a pillow in the center and use the cable and wench provided. Additionally, I would hang a few milk jugs off the eyelids of the cover to provide added security due to the high winds in my area.

If I have a 24’ round pool should I be continuing to get a cover to fit a 24’ pool or go bigger? If bigger, how much bigger? Where have you all had success purchasing your covers from? And should I continue to use the cable and wench with the kit along with milk jugs, or is there a better way? This year I was thinking about not using a pillow as they were always a pain in the butt. I read on a few posts that people like using Intex River Run II’s, so maybe I will purchase one or two.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Judd

Judd, we have not really seen many covers that last a long time. If you get more that one season out of it you are lucky. I would get bigger and do the one, two punch you have been doing with the strap and jugs.

I have given up on winter covers. Nothing can keep the high wind in my area from blowing the cover into my pool. I even bought a cover called a "Hurricane Cover" to compensate for the wind! This year, I'm going with a safety net cover and a leaf net on top. After the leave are off the trees, I'll put the leaf net away. I may open to a mess, but I won't have to deal with a winter cover blowing into the pool along with the sand bags used to secure it.

I HATE winter covers..with that said..it is a necessary evil for our 33ft agp...because of all the tree's that drop leaves in the fall. I buy the cheapest one I can get, and plan on replacing yearly, or if lucky, every other year. THen when spring comes we pump off as much snow and rain water as we can..and then I have to have 3 of my grown(high school) kids get in the pool in order to "HEAVE" the heavy, stinky, full of leaf crud mess up and over the pool wall and onto the ground. It's a horrible job, and one I hate, but again necessary because otherwise our pool would be a swamp.
