Not sure what I do wrong, but I have an intex sand filter/pump, and I always seem to find a small amount of sand when im vaccuming. The filter is quite new, and the same thing happened with my previous filter as well.

Obviously the sand is smaller than the openings. Since the filter is new, I doubt it's a cracked lateral. It's probably just poorly graded sand. Make sure you rinse well after backwashing to get any sand out of the clean side before it starts returning water to the pool. You might also try catching the stuff with a hole-less sock rubber-banded over the return. Instead of vacuuming it up and having it make its way back, you take it out of circulation completely.
