Why Do I Find Sand in My Pool?

I find sand daily in the pool...does it come in from the returns? It is not copious amounts, but enough to make me notice it.

Is there a way to determine whether it is coming from the sand filter, or simply kids and wind bringing it in?

I did have sand until I replaced the actual sand in the filter. Finally filled the pool over Xmas break (bought this house in 2016) after replacing the sand with quikrete brand pool filter sand. From the start, I had sand finding its way into the pool. Thanks to this forum, others had similar experiences. Back in March, I replaced the sand again, but I used HTH brand. Now, the only "sand" I see in the pool is from normal dirt in the air.

Yes, there are known problems with Quikcrete pool filter sand not being screened to the proper size. We definitely recommend not using the Quikcrete brand. Strange thing is that it's been going on for years and a few people (at least) have reported it to Quikcrete and they have been unable or unwilling to correct the problem.

Some of my sand comes from sandstone rocks on the waterfall. Some of my sand comes from ants messing around under the pool deck near the skimmers. Some of it probably comes from dogs and varmints getting in the pool. Do spray Home Defense round the pool deck and skimmers to deter ants from doing their thingunder the deck. It works pretty well.

I thought I had a sand issue with sand coming in from the filter, but after some more investigation, I determined that this is actually just grit from my concrete pool deck coming in with out feet as we enter the pool. My pool deck is just normal concrete like you would have on a driveway. I scopped up some of what I thought was sand, looked at it closely and compared to pool deck versus sand and filter, and clearly it was from deck not filter.
