It is a Ruud P-D336A Digital heater, and there is, on the inlet (out?) port is that thing in a plastic cup like screw on underneath. My old heater didn't have it, and I remember it was something that conditioned the water somehow. But I can't find it in the manual. Do I have to change it now and then? Thanks.

It's an anode, all I had to do was read the plastic case. It looks pretty big so I don't have to change it, but, I tried to turn it and it did not. The wing nut came right off. Will it just unscrew with the proper persuasion?

Cautions on replacing the Protek Shield:
- STOP the pool pump before attempting to remove ProTek Shield Assembly. Failure to do so may result in damage to ProTek Shield Assembly, loss of pool water, or personal injury
- Do not use tools to remove (twist) the ProTek Shield Assembly or the wing nut on the stud of the ProTek Shield Assembly
- Use a strap wrench to loosen the assembly if your hand cannot do it. Do not tighten it with a strap wrench.
- While the manual says "Rotate ProTek Shield Assy clockwise (by hand) to unscrew it from the assembly" it is a standard right hand thread that turns counter clockwise (as viewed from the bottom looking up)
