What causes a salt cell to fail?

Hi, Its my 2nd year with a pool. 65000g with a zodiac duoclear 130. No issues last year but this year the generator keeps going to min and saying add salt. I can get it to start generating again for a while by switching polarity but it only lasts a day at most. I believe the cell is on its last legs. It's about 5 years old based on what the previous owners told me. What causes them to fail? Just want to maximize life out of my new one.

Hi, welcome to TFP! Age is one factor, not keeping the cell free of scale is another, and cleaning the cell with MA too often is another. High calcium levels in the water contribute to scale if not managed properly. Also the amount of run time. It is better to get an oversized cell and run it at a lower percentage than to get a cell rate for the size of your pool and run it all the time. For example, you have a 15000 gallon pool and there is a cell rated at 15000 gallons and 30000 gallons. If you get the cell rated at 30000 gallons and maintain it properly then it should be able to run at a lower percentage and produce chlorine a few years longer than the cell rated for 15000 gallons.
