Hello,
I’m a first year pool owner and so this is a first for me. It has rained so much here on Long Island the past couple days that the water level in my pool is now above the skimmer. Not sure what to do. Should I drain the pool using the waste option on my pump? I don’t want to backwash yet I don’t think cause I have a DE filter and I just replaced the DE a couple weeks ago. If I drain by using waste, will the water come out the same place as the backwash? I’ve attached a photo of my pump settings for reference. As a always, thanks in advance for any help!

Yup, turn off your pump, move the MPV to WASTE, turn on the pump, and the water should be dumped out the waste line without affecting your DE.

I lowered the water level in my pool about 1.5" in preparation for the rain this week. With the forecast I may need to lower it again before the sun shines.

Hmm... this got me to thinking - is there an issue if the water level is high, or can the water level be too high ?

More specifically, can a high water level, or too high water level impact the pump ?

My pool have an overflow outlet which is piped to a dry well in the yard but I keep it plugged so if we do have a heavy rain the water level in my pool can get up to the underside of the coping. At this level the water certainly fills the skimmers but there is still some open air room in them and the lids do have 2 lift off holes.

I'm interested in any thoughts/insights regarding high/very high water levels and if it may negatively affect a running pump.

Thanks very much.

If dumping too much water at one time is an issue, then you could lower the water level with a utility or sump pump at a slower pace. The main concern using your pool pump and filter's waste setting is a downhill neighbor.
