Was borax a fad?

If you are asking about adding borates to the water, the newness seems to have worn off and regulars treat it as what it is: an optional addition to enhance the water somewhat. Most of the sparkle of water comes from properly maintaining the pool, keeping pH in line and enough FC for the CYA level. Borates add to that somewhat, offers a bit of help towards algae and helps stabilize pH, but at one time it seems it was seen as almost a magical solution to fixing pool problems. But there is nothing to "switch" to, it is just an additive that still requires regular testing and dosing of pool water and maintaining numbers.

As far as borax, still used for pH adjustments but yes less so for introducing borates. Borax requires muriatic acid added along with it, whereas boric acid just lowers the pH a bit which is typically needed in a TFPC pool anyway.
