Anyone ever deal with these things.. (Edit by Jim R.)
Every year, diligently treat lawn for all insects not to mention feeding lawn.
2 years ago I caught 18 with mouse traps and peanut butter, last year none, this year they are in full force. Noticed a small hole in ground near deck wall so I know they are back and my lawn is proof!. These ( expletive) things have top soil channels everywhere, don't know how deep they go . Wonder since we had near 1 inch shy of 5 feet of snow with no melting to expose the grass since Jan if it had something to do with it. These creeps come out at night like thieves. Usually they have very tiny eyes ( until they get snapped) and short tails, similar to a mouse. What brings them in? I often wonder if they can cause issue with AG pool bottom. Caddy Shack comes to mind.

Try the Gopher Gasser. I have ground squirrels (active during the day) and I hook it up to an old gas powered leaf blower I have and let the combustion fumes (carbon monoxide) slowly permeate their underground homes. It takes some effort to figure out which holes are active and then some trial and error in getting the right hole gassed. But eventually they drift off to a nice forever-sleep to slowly become fertilizer and beetle food....I don’t use poison because one sickly/poisoned squirrel can cause many secondary kills (hawks & owls) and then the squirrel population will explode. Poison is not an effective long-term strategy.

I do have a few of those gopher gasser sticks I bought last year after my initial round of attack, never had holes in the yard as far as I could tell other than right up against the lower wooden deck skirt, was worried about catching deck on fire. The one I used got snuffed out right away so I gave up on the rest of them. So you rigged up a way to direct the exhaust into the holes? Sorry about having the edit done, thought I was good.
Something just came to mind as I was typing, my wife sets out a bowl of salted peanuts every other day for her so called friends that she has names for, the squirrels! I wonder if that started it all?

Sorry, Gopher-Gasser was the wrong thing. I meant this -

Got it on amazon. You can hook it up to a car tailpipe but I use an old gas leaf blower because they generate more carbon monoxide than a car does. And they can be quieter if you can get them to idle slower. You hook a short garden hose to the end of it then fish it down their hole a bit and cover with dirt. Give it 30mins and their home will fill with deadly exhaust vapors. If they are active at night then gas the holes during the day.
