Vacuum To Waste with a Push/Pull Valve on Sand Filter

For about 5 months, my Hayward variable speed pump was out of commission (bad VFD drive, replaced it and now it is working). Long story short, I have been cleaning up my pool slowly but surely for the last month. It went green when the water got a little warmer and after killing the algae, the pool floor had a thick coat of dirt and dead algae to clean.

With the push/pull filter I was unable to vacuum straight to waste to efficiently clean the pool and rather than backwashing very frequently, I found a nice video on youtube for sand filter hacks (see 1:12 for the setup I used) to bypass the filter and vacuum to waste.

Here's a parts list:
  • 2" Pipe (about 10" long)
  • 2" Pipe flex coupler to to attach to top pipe in the sand filter.
  • 2" 90° Elbow
  • 2" to 1.5" Bushing
  • 1.5" about 6" long pipe to put my backwash hose on.

It took about 1 hour to vacuum the pool floor and after the first 40 minutes, I had to refill the pool for a while. When I was finished, the pool floor looked nice and white again!

Pictures are attached. Let me know what you think. Hope this is helpful!
