Using DIY Intex adapters

Hello all. Newbie here but very avid DIY’er. I just upgraded to a 16x32 intex ultra. Big step up for me. I’ve got all my plumbing laid out and ready to glue. I have a quick question however. The DIY PVC 1 1/2 with 1 1/4 reducer bushing looks good and I’ve found the relevant pieces at Home Depot. Lowe’s reducer bushing doesn’t have enough of a lip.

While dry-fitting the DIY adapter It really seems like there just isn’t enough spacing to really be able to tighten the collar down onto the pump. I assume there’s no need for an additional gasket as the Intex Sand/SWG system has a nice thick gasket already. But if so that would be even less room. I actually took one of the bushings and very carefully used my chop saw (has a laser line so I know exactly where I am cutting) to trim it down about an 1/8 of an inch. This is best done with the bushing very snugly inside a 2-3 foot section of 1 1/2 pvc pipe so it can be held sturdily and safely in place. Still leaves me plenty of lip but did give me significantly more bite on the pump’s threaded pipe.

Are people having leak issues? Are they able to tighten the collar down enough without shaving things down like I did?

Just debating whether I reconsider and maybe get a 2” female threaded coupler to slip with a 1 1/2 reducer. Although that method takes out the gasket and you get no help from having the gasket there.

Thanks in advance. Getting ready for summer here in NC. I’m sure I’ll have lots more as I fill this beast with water and start getting ready to have people over.

I made my adapter out of a PVC non-metallic conduit 1.5-1.25 reducer bushing from HD: Carlon 1-1/2 in. Non-Metallic Reducer Bushing (Standard Fitting) E950HGR - The Home Depot

I cut the tabs off with my oscillating tool and then sanded the face down with some 220 grit sand paper until it was nice and flat. Took the threaded collar from an Intex hose and inserted it over the bushing. I then glued it to a 1.5" coupler and left enough gap for the threaded collar to spin freely. No leaks so far (its been working since Saturday).

I used the reducer bushing found in the standard PVC section. Although that one from the electrical section does look like it has a much smaller profile on the lip/flange and might be able able to tighten down more. My chop saw method works ok but it's really difficult not to get some angle on the cut, regardless of how careful I am. I could shave it down on my belt sander pretty quickly as well or get really crazy and run it over my jointer.

I'll go check it out. They're cheap enough and I haven't glued anything yet.

I was able to swing by HD and pick up the bushing you used. It is far superior for two reasons. 1. The lip is definitely lower profile and I was able to get the collar on completely and very snug. 2. At least with my couplings, you are able to fully seat the bushing and the collar still spins. It’s definitely a tad longer. No need to worry about pushing the bushing too far in.
