My new pool is now 3 weeks old and is sparkling and clear thanks to all on this forum. Initially I've been using TriChlor to build up the stabilizer in my pool. My CYA as tested by my TF-100 is around 30 + or - 10. I've now switched to 10% liquid chlorine as to not add more stabilizer. I've been getting 2gal of 10% chlorine for $6 at Walmart. (yes i checked the production dates are recent to ensure strength) I've read elsewhere that I'll have to worry about the TDS Total Dissolved Solids using liquid chlorine. What are these TDS's and should I really be worried about them? Thanks in advance for your replies!

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) is a very old measurement of essentially everything dissolved in the water. We don't pay it much mind, why people in the industry continue to get so concerned about it really boggles my mind. Back in the day before we could measure for all the things we do it was used to know when water was "old" and needed replaced. That really hasn't been the case for something like 20 years, but the old techs trained the new techs and they are now training the newer techs, and all those old habits seem to stick around. You will find that to be true a lot in the pool industry, unfortunately.

You know what the big bad solids in the TDS that your bleach is adding are -----> SALT!!! ... oh the humanity!!!

You know what also adds salt to your pool? ... every other form of chlorine. pucks, powders ... they all add chlorine and salt and either calcium or CYA, both of which build up and can be problematic.

The salt is nothing to worry about.

Thanks for the replies ! I didn't think it mattered, but I thought I'd ask just to be sure.

With the new pool and plaster my CH is running between 300-350 and my CY is around 30 so I definitely don't want to add any more Calcium or CYA
