Hey all - we're looking at buying a used pool to get us started. The ad says the pool is in good shape, needs new pump. Ok, can deal with that. But my question is this - is it ok to use a used liner or is it recommend to purchase a new liner? Thanks for any insight you can offer!

Hello and Welcome back!

I like to recommend that you should plan on a new liner. They are fairly inexpensive and you know there is no holes or patches. Also you wouldn't have to fiddle with making sure the skimmer & returns line up properly. I think it’s best to start with a known good liner. you can pick the pattern too.

If you become a paid forum supporter, then you get a discount at INYOPool.com and TFTestkit.net . Other well rated sites are PoolFactory, IntheSwim, etc. There are many online shops that sell liners. Most Pool $tores should also. 25 gauge liners are good. If you decide to buy it, you will want to pay attention to the type of liner as there are 3 basic kinds: Overlap, Beaded, and J-hook. You will want to use the type that matches the pool.

I'd want to pay attention to how well it is structurally, does it seem sturdy or falling apart. Are all the pieces there? Are there any (major) rust spots. Many are prone to rust around the skimmer/return area. One important part that may be buried in the dirt is the bottom wall rails and post feet. You may no be able to tell the condition of these until it is taken apart or you dig into the dirt. Same thing for the wall bottom. Surface rust can be worked with, but major rust that compromised the structure would be a red flag in my opinion. You can find parts at some Pool $tores or online dealers, but pricing may dictate if it's worth it. Does it look like the supports are straight and not bent. Has the wall been kinked or buckled?

Take pics as you disassemble. Put all hardware in a ziplock baggie to make sure you don't loose them.
