Ultra High Chlorine Levels

Hello,

Went on vacation and power went out turning my pump off for a week and the cover blew in from some strong storms which gave me an algae outbreak when I got home.
I have a round 6000 gallon cheap pool with upgraded sand filter. From the research here I knew I had to SLAM. I didn't have the proper test kit to test for high levels of chlorine and didn't want to wait for the TF-100 kit I order to come in so I started the SLAM process anyway. I think I put in way too much chlorine of the past 4-5 days and now that I have the TF-100 Kit I attempted to test the chlorine level and gave up at 300 drops and the sample was not pink, but still not clear. It was more cloudy.

Is it possible my chlorine level is that high? My water has turned a cloudy blue and is slowly clearing. No visible signs of any algae whatsoever. I was going to replace some of the water to lower the levels. My pool only gets about 2 hours of direct sunlight due to tree cover. When I started the SLAM my CYA was at or below 30. During the SLAM I checked it and got a CYA of less than 30 so I added some stabilizer and haven't re-checked it yet.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Perhaps testing error - can you describe your exact steps for testing using the FAS-DPD chlorine test?
You can also use pool math to calculate how much chlorine you added using effects of adding.

At only 6000 gallons, it can often be wiser to dump most of the bad water as the cost of refilling, and the time saved versus SLAM are real.

Welcome to TFP!

The FC test is over when the pink is gone, even if the sample is cloudy. Run the test with these parameters and see if that gives you a reading.

What type of chlorine did you use and how much? If it was dichlor, then your CYA also went up and if it was calhypo then the cloudiness may be caused by that. SLAM must be done with liquid chlorine and a FAS-DPD kit.

I used mostly liquid chlorine. Used some Cal Hypo. Was able to retest and get a reading of around 80 pm.

Can I get an accurate CYA at this chlorine level?
Supposedly. But you can wait a couple days and ghe chlorine might be down to normal range. You’re only using 10ml of water (not 25ml) and dividing the number of drops by 2 to come up with 80ppm, correct?

Added some water last night and got these readings today

FC: 70
CC: 1.5
CYA: below
So you’re losing about 10 per day. In a few days, you should be back into normal range. Just make sure to get some more CYA in the water once it gets down to about 12 or 15ppm
