To retrieve leaf vac mesh bag?

After some recent tweaks, I was doing very well hauling a hidden mountain of organic waste from the bottom of our pool. The bag was coming up fully loaded on most trips, and it required some care to ease it over onto the pool deck for unloading and reseating on the vac unit.

On the last trip 'into the murk' the bag became detached. It may have just become too heavy and pulled away fro the base unit. I cannot think of a way to retrieve it, and it may just have to sit on bottom until I have the water clear enough to locate it. It's probably around 10-12 lbs weight while fully loaded. Can anyone think of a way to retrieve it? I can probably use a leaf skimmer to get an idea of its resting position, but it won't be possible to lift it using that.

A skimmer & a brush- with 2 people possibly. Broom & dustpan style.
Alternatively the manual vac if the bag has defined edges that would prohibit it from being completely sucked in

For normal household vac jobs that require not sucking objects into the vac (like vacuuming curtains) I place a panty hose or mesh bag over the tool/hose and secure it with a rubber band /hair pony.
Maybe a mesh laundry bag would fit over your vac head & be able to be secured so it doesn’t get sucked into the hose allowing you to use the suction to retrieve your lost bag?
