I have an old (circa 1999) Sta-Rite Dynaglas MPRA6F-148L pump and the motor is shot (motor is a 1.5 HP Century USQ1152). I already knew the shaft seal was bad because I've been listening to the bearings scream the past month and there's significant visible corrosion.
The pool is inground, 20k Gal, filter is DE, we have a gas heater but no water features, plumbing is all 2" PVC, I estimate about 100' of plumbing. I'm in MA, pool runs about 5 months a year, we bring the pump inside for the winter.
I thought I could get away with replacing just the motor again (last replaced in 2016) but the bolts connecting the motor to the seal plate are so corroded I can't get them to budge.
Seems like with a motor, seal plate, and seal kit I'm about half way to the cost of a lower-end new pump, so I'm looking for confirmation or "no you're crazy just do the fix"
I checked pool school, and If I do go for a whole new pump I'd probably want a VS one, but I don't see any advantage to sticking with StaRite, especially when cheap ones on Amazon are 1/3 the cost ($500-$700) and get here in 2 days.
Am I signing up for more problems if I get a cheap one off Amazon?
