I've had an inground pool for over 18 years that I got with the house. I have had the occasional issue with ignoring the pool and having to clean up a green mess, and generally it has been a positive experience, but then 2024 rolled around. In early January I was told by the local pool shop after several visits and tests that my pool was overloaded with CYA and calcium. They were recommending drain and refill during water restrictions so I just gave up, decided it was time to get rid of the pool or make a koi pond. In May I retested the pool myself, and at the pool shop. The first thing I realized is there are differences in the results between me and the shop. And the CYA and calcium are gone? The pool shop was previously reporting my CYA at over 1000 and now it is 30? My readings for ph are consistently 7.2 - 7.3 while they get 8.0 on their magic computer. I use what I believe is the Taylor TF-1000 (Leslies 6 test kit). I also tried some test strips with similar results. How can a pool shop not have accurate readings on pool tests? Why was I foolish enough to believe them and spend the money they suggested was needed?
I am in the process of replacing my sand filter and converting to salt water chlorine generation. The filter was an old Triton 24 inch model that blew out the side wall. I had intended to go with filter balls in the new filter, but TFP and some other sites that have user feedback all report they are a mistake. Going back with sand and returning the unopened boxes of filter balls.
Thanks for all the valuable knowledge on this site. I wish I had found it sooner.
