Thank You TFP and a Question

After firing my pool service shortly after my replaster, I’ve been following the TFP method for the last year and a half. I’m proud to say my pool consistently sparkles and have had zero problems. So thank you to all the forum folks who provide the wealth of information that enables me to do that.

Now for the question. My SWG is a year old and every now and then, I get the “chlorinator off high salt/amps display. I consistently keep my salt between 3100-3300. When this happens, I restart the SWG and after the countdown everything is normal again. Both the positive and negative readings are where they should be. I’ve resoldered the K1 joint approximately 4 or 5 years ago and up till recently had no issues. Any ideas?

Thanks again and appreciate any replies.

When the amps hit 8.0, the high amps warning comes on.

This can happen at normal salinity if the water is over about 90 degrees.

If the water is warmer than 90 and the amps are getting close to 8.0, you have to lower the salinity some.

The Aquarite will generate at 2,400 ppm and above. There is a low salinity warning at 2,400 ppm to 2,700 ppm but the cell will still work.

You should be ok with those numbers. Maybe the water was warmer earlier?

Maybe it happened when adding salt and some salt got sucked into the main drain while the cell was on?

Ok, I suspect that it might have been due to salt getting sucked up by the main drain if it happened right after adding salt.

Always turn the SWG off when adding salt. Brush the pool well after adding salt to get the salt well distributed.

Another possibility is that the water exiting the heater is getting over 90 degrees when the heater is on. If the water exiting the heater is getting too hot, the flow rate might be a little bit too low, especially if the heater is a big 400,000 btu/hr model.

Make sure that the flow is at least 10 gpm higher than the minimum flow rate for the heater.

If you're heating the spa, it might be best to shut off the SWG while using the spa.

There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to the frequency of the display message. For example it came on this am shortly after the pool came on. I haven’t added salt in a few weeks. It might come on tomorrow or it may only come on in a couple of weeks. I haven’t had the heater on in a week although I’m sure the water temp, when it’s on, is over 90 degrees on the exit side. Really strange. Maybe the cell/system is sensing a higher salinity than actual and shutting off the chlorinator. Again, I will lower the salt level and see what happens. BTW, I use the Taylor 1766 to test the salt level.

Thanks again for the suggestions. After watching the readings for a few days, I noticed the salt ppm’s differ from positive and negative. This am the positive was 3200 and negative was 3400. Normal or an issue?

They should be the same. A 200 ppm difference isn't a big deal, but it might indicate that the cell is beginning to fail.

I wouldn't worry too much unless the difference hits about 400 ppm.
