Hello fellow TFPers, does anyone know of a good forum/TFP like site for investing, specifically 529 college savings plans? My specific questions are around custodial plans. We just found out that my mom's "529 plan" is actually a custodial account that gets turned over to the kids when 18. This should have never been setup this way and I want the adults to maintain control of the $ and be able to spend the $ on either kids college expenses.

Looking for advice on what to do and someone to talk me off the ledge.

Is the custodial account a UGMA/UTMA? I assume so, since you said the funds transfer to them at 18. That does impact how you transfer them to a 529. UTMAs are irrevocable gifts, so the funds belong to child already and will have to stay as such.

Savingforcollege.com is a good resource for comparing the different 529 plans.

Bogleheads is also good.

Thanks. My mom's actual products are Hartford Smart529s, but setup as custodial accounts instead of individual 529's. This means the kids own the $ at some point and they can use it as they please.

The 529 plan we own is an individual 529 and gives us the flexibility we want, and the control of the $ we want.

I'll check out the other forums, but getting pretty good advice here so far:
