I just got my test kit this morning + salt strips. We have had the salt in for 2 days now. Last night we added the CYA (which was all dissolved this morning) and I also added the Chlorine tonight.
It was probably a stupid idea to test after putting the Chlorine in because I think it screwed with my TA level. I'm not sure if it's possible or not but I just want to check. My TA level was at 240?! Anyways it would be great if anyone knew what's wrong. I also listed the other results below-

PH: 7.2
Salt: 2400 ppm (yes we are getting more salt right now)
TA: 240 ppm
FC: 0.5 ppm
CC: 1 ppm
CYA: 80

Uh oh.. pool levels are that great

I'm back again. I just now tested our pool again with the Taylor K-2005 for the TA, FC and CC levels.
Last night our pool was at a 240 TA, 0.5 ppm FC and a 1 ppm CC

i just checked it again
TA: 200
FC: 0.5 ppm
CC: 2 ppm

last night we added a bit more salt and also about 55 oz of bleach. We leave tomorrow afternoon and will be gone until Monday. We would like to be able to swim in our pool on Tuesday (4th of July)
does anyone know what I should do? Add more bleach?

oh I also tested the pool with the test strips that it came with (just to be sure I'm not doing something wrong) and here are the results

Update: I just added the rest of the bottle of bleach. I used 55 oz last night btw

Re: TA very high and FC very low!! Leaving tomorrow!

May be the only time a few tablets could help...what is your Cya? I'm no expert but I would think you could take it to shock level, add some tabs and be fine till Monday...

Experts, I'm trying to help, smack my hand if I'm wrong please :D

TA at 200!!?

My TA was at 240 last night, and then I just now checked and it was at 200. I read all of the tabs on lowering it and it said you can lower it for the reasons of a dramatically changing pH level or high calcium saturation but don't lower it for meeting it at a target number

I haven't really seen any dramatic changes in the pH level in the past 3 days. Should I lower it or not? If so how do I actually do it? I'm a bit confused about the "Lower Total Alkalinity" tab and it would be great if someone could explain! :)

hi emmahofmann

I do hope you can keep everything in the same thread so we can accurately follow your steps and offer help.

It seems right now, you have a problem with low chlorine that takes precedent over your TA concern. I saw you had a high CC which is indicative of something in the water consuming the FC and you added bleach. How long are you running your SWG ? Is your water clear? Can you post your most recent test results that include everything like this:

FC
CC
PH
TA
CYA
CH

I will be testing the water again tomorrow so I can give you updates before I leave. The water is clear, we have been running the pump for 24 non stop for 2-3 days and we just turned it off and we are scheduling for it to run 6 hours which will go through all of the water.

Your FC level needs go be set based on your CYA level and the [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA]. It needs to stay at target for the most part and never drop down to minimum. When FC gets to minimum the pool is not sanitary and algae will begin to grow. Use bleach to raise your FC up to target asap. If you are leaving for a while raising FC to shock level is a good idea.

We have conducted several scientific experiments and we have found that test strips are best read in a trash can upside down. :) You can look at them if you want to but nobody here cares what they say.

And is your SWG running 100% when the pump is running? Or do you have a percent setting option? Your FC does indeed seem low if running pump and SWG 24/7

I think everything is turning out pretty good now! Here are the results
pH: 7.3
Salt: 3710
TA: 200
FC: 8.5
CC: <0.5, the pink wasn't very noticeable at all and was completely gone when I added one drop of the reagent

and the CYA is at 80

I am almost sure these are decent results, what do you think?
