This just started leaking and at first it looked like it was the union. Easy fix I figured and replaced the union seals, part 24 on the blow apart. It's still leaking slightly but now it looks like it's coming from where the fitting enters the filter housing. Do these just thread in from the outside? It looks that way but it's not definitively clear from the diagram. I'm not sure if I need to take apart the filter. I already have the new o ring, part 22.

Thanks that was really helpful. I'm going to tackle it this weekend. The filter looks original, so I'm hoping it just needs o-rings and isn't cracked or anything else.

It’s raining out here so I’m not positive I stopped the leak but we’ll see. This filter is original so I’m putting lipstick on a pig. The o rings were pretty flat though.

If I had to do it again I would have just replaced the black threaded union pieces and/or the threaded elbow. It took a strap wrench and a ton of muscle to get the upper one to turn. You would need a massive crescent wrench for that and a pipe wrench or channel locks that size would surely mess up the plastic.

The bottom was was tight but manageable. The reason was the female threads on the elbow were boogered up with black stuff from the male threads. I was able to clean the threads with a pick and water and I used the union as a thread chaser of sorts, backing in it and out a ton so assembly was easier.

No more leaks. Don’t be an idiot like me and just try to replace one union gasket that you think is leaking. Water goes downhill so it’s tough to tell for sure, and if one is leaking the others are in similar shape. It’s all of 20 bucks worth of o rings from Amazon.
