SWG pool and possibly no CYA

I have a friend with a SWG pool but he has never heard of CYA. The pool tech told him just to run his SWG and do nothing else. He has no test kits or strips and does not know what his other chemistry levels are but he does have a crystal clear pool.
I gave him some info from this website, including the Chlorine /CYA chart. After reading some posts, he now understands that CYA is needed in his pool but thinks that CYA may be added automatically, by the SWG.
Can this be correct? I use the BBB method so I wouldn't know for sure but that doesn't sound right. It may even sound funny to some of the SWG experts.

So, does he need to add either stabilizer or conditioner, manually into his pool or by pouring it into the SWG?
I also advised him to buy a drop test kit. I think it's important to have even though he has a SWG pool. Is this correct?

No, the SWG will not add CYA/stabilizer to the pool, so you are correct in advising him to buy some and add it. It does not get poured into SWG... check out Pool School for proper way to add. Also a good suggestion to him to buy the kit. Let’s hope he does!

Also, wow. Pool tech is a misnomer!

You're definitely on the right track.

Some people run them that way... SWG on during daylight hours and no CYA. It works but it's harsh! CYA buffers chlorine so it's more gentle, and things like the elastic in swimwear will last longer. You will also run fewer hours on the SWG to maintain a reliable and easily measured level of sanitation.
