Hi everyone,

My salt cell was displaying 2800 ppm, since this is close to the minimum, I added more salt. I’ve realized that adding a bag of salt (20 kg) always raises my salt by 300 ppm so I thought I would be fine. However, my salt cell is displaying 4000 at the moment. I do not have a proper salt test kit with me, but I do know that salinity levels are always around 100-200 higher in the system. I know this because this season due to not having a salt test kit, I was relying on a pool store and my salt was always lower than the readings.

I tested the salt and it seems like it is around 3800 at the moment and the display is at 4000. It hasn’t been 24 hrs since I added the salt. I added with chlorinator off and turned it back on 5 hrs after. I waited 3 hours to test. Maybe I should wait 24 hrs? Should I drain and refill now? Or should I just wait until the pool gives me a “high salt” warning”?

I brushed the pool after adding salt by the way.

Any advice is appreciated

You're flying blind without a K1766. You can't argue with the cell no matter how much you know better, but it'll save you from relying on the less accurate cell reading and pool store.

You dosed with bad data, and it is what it is now. Salt can take a full day to mix, so hopefully it straightens itself out. :)

I know I know :( I just cant justify that expense now. I bought the other kit plus other pool things etc. first year… maybe next year I’ll have my kit. It’s almost end of season for me in Canada.

Anyway I’ll wait 24 hrs and in this case, what would you do? If it still displays 4000? For now it actually went down to 3900. If it never tells me “high salt level” I don’t do anything ?

Yup. Road test it and see how it goes.
for me Kits are more expensive due to shipping.
I get it, I do. Especially this late in the season. Store your next kit climate controlled and you should get 2 seasons out of it. After that it's still probably good because the silver nitrate is particularly shelf stable, but the first wonky reading will make you wonder.

For the most part, SWGs are fairly forgiving with high salt. If it’s not yelling at you with blinking lights, you’re fine.

Update, the reading is now 3200 and I did a quick test strip and it matches. I think I should be fine. Always best to test salt 24 hrs later even if I added just a bag of salt.
