I have a Circupool Edge-40, but this question probably pertains to any. Is it better to control "on" time by wiring to a timer (that's how I have mine, power shuts off and on to the SWG as set). OR, leave it powered on 24/7, and have it active based on pump flow rate (when pump is off, it is off via "low flow"). I'm thinking this 2nd way might be easier on the unit.

The recommendation is that the flow switch is a SECONDARY safety switch. The PRIMARY safety switch is to remove the power. So, your first scenario is best. Also, you have to ensure that the timer is within the schedule of the pump - for example start 15mins after the pump starts and stop 15mins before the pump is scheduled to turn off.

Tcat,

You never, ever want to rely on the flow switch as your only safety device..

The easiest thing to do is just run your VS main pool pump 24/7 at a low RPM...

Many here do.. We love making a little chlorine all the time and skimming all the time. I personally like the look of my pool when the water has a little motion.

It costs me less than $20 bucks a month to run 24/7, and my 3 HP IntelliFlo pump is well over 10 years old.. And, newer VS pumps are a lot more energy efficient..

I believe, without and actually proof, that running 24/7 is better on the pump than turning it on and off each day.. I have three pools and they all have been running 24/7 for well over 10 years, with no failures of any kind...

Thanks,

Jim R.

The timer thing is the reason I asked. My pump "lost" its clock, so goes on and off at the wrong time, until I reset it. So the SWG was getting no flow for several hours. I think I figured out the pump issue (if power goes out, it resets the pump clock). I just figured if the SWG was always in standby, it would run the 7 hours the pump ran, even if time of day was off. I plan on leaving in my first scenario and fixing the pump.
