Liquid Chlorine
Just a thought... I know that adding liquid chlorine adds salt into the pool. Given that fact, would it be worth my while to look into getting a SWG once my salt levels get high enough to warrant it? How long would it take for that to happen that my pool could support a SWG with me adding 12.5% Bleach throughout the season?

I might just get a salt test kit to check my levels soon... this is my second year with the same water, and I am curious.

Using Effects of Adding Chemicals down at the bottom of poolmath.... One gallon of 12.5% bleach adds 14 ppm salt to a 14600 gallon pool. Assuming you never lost a drop of the pool water, 3200 ppm Salt/ 14 is 228 gallons of bleach. About 2000 ppm FC. So figure a few years at least to need that much chlorine. If you lose any to splash out or backwashing or winterizing, even longer.

If you buy salt at Home Depot or Lowes, it's pretty darn cheap. That's an interesting exercise, but not really worth trying to increase your salt that way.

^^Actually Tim, I "almost" got there...last year on opening my salinity was 2700 when I switched to swg...so I didn't need to add much salt ;)

Then again, it was old water and I'd converted a swamp and I been using softened water to top up which when working incorrectly lets a bit of salt through...

Ron, with that said, no need to wait what might be several years if you're interested n converting. In my book, it'd have been wholly worth it even if I'd had to add 60 lbs of salt ;) (Which I did after a liner change with new water ;)

This is my third season with my current pool, I use nothing but bleach. Salt is at 1200ppm per Taylor K1766 kit, so that's about 600ppm per season for me. At that rate after five seasons I'll be right about 3000ppm.

I plan to install the SWG this year, as soon as the pool is warm enough to run it, I'm almost halfway to the required 3000ppm of salt already.
