SWCG vs Chlorine

I have been trying to maintain chlorine for about three weeks, and I am on day two of the slam process. Prior to slam, I tested my pool regularly, and even after super chlorinate mode at 100%, along with two tablets. I was waking up each morning to 0.5 free chlorine. I am also part of a Facebook group called saltwater pools. Often times I see people comment. Why are you adding chlorine to your saltwater pool? Just put it on super chlorinate. Why do people question the chlorine/slam process on that Facebook group? Obviously as saltwater owners, we have tried everything..

Cause they don’t know any better, and Facebook isn’t much better than the national enquirer.

I always keep a couple gallons of liquid chlorine at home just in case the unexpected happens.

Superchlorinate won’t overcome an algae bloom once it starts … the FC is consumed as fast as it’s generated because the cell is generating over 24 hrs, not all at once. And many cells are undersized for the pool - the rated sizes assume cell running constantly therefore “super” mode doesn’t really change things. Hence why we advise 2x or 3x cell size both for life of service and easier to maintain FC levels at varying run rates.

Many people don’t understand the biology of algae either so it’s easier to want to just mash a button…

I think my problem was white mold? I was finding this white/cream colored growth minimally along vinyl seams. It would easily brush off, but I could tell it was taking away a little bit of my vinyl liner color! Also, I felt like I could smell mildew on my suit. Hopefully this slam process takes care of everything sooner than later!

Pour some vinegar on it to see if it fizzles (calcium). Otherwise does it smear on a piece of paper? May be biological then

I spent a few weeks in a Facebook pool maintenance group.....what a joke. So much misinformation and many times the correct answer would get buried amongst all the know it alls.
