SWAMP HELP PLEASE

Pool did not get touched for about 5 months. It is the worst grren swamp I have ever seen. I am brushing sides, running pump, and then vaccuming. My plan was to and Polyquat 60 1 gt and 3 bags of shock and let the pump run overnight. In the morning I plan to test and SLAM until clear. Does this sound like a good plan? Of course my other readings are all out of wack...should I do anything about them (pH- CYA) before SLAMMING? Readings this am Chlorine-0 pH- below 6.8, CYA -0 TA-5 Calcium- 125. Thank you for all the help.

Slow down.

Forget the PQ60 and shock.

Do an ammonia check before adding CYA. Add chlorine for 10 ppm and test your free chlorine after 30-minutes. You likely have ammonia in your water if you lost 80%+ of FC in 30 minutes.

Thank you for your reply. If I understand this correctly-
1. I should not add the poluquat.
2. I should not start the slamming process until I do that first ammonia test.
3. If the test shows I have ammonia I should continue adding chlorine to raise my FC 10ppm every 30 minutes until my FC begins to hold above 3ppm.
4. At that point add stabilizer to raise CYA to 30 and begain the SLAM process?

Sorry- never had to do this before-Helen

How long does it usually take to get the chlorine to stabilize at 3 I have added 10 ppm (1.5 gallons of 10%) for the 4th time Just curious

Keep adding chlorine. How long depends on how bad your ammonia problem is. You have to keep adding chlorine until all the bacteria creating the ammonia is consumed.
