I’ve got some stubborn staining in a pool that I inherited when I bought my home two years ago. The house was a foreclosure and the pool wasn’t being properly maintained for sometime although the bank did open it and install new pumps and cover. Last summer (second season with the pool) I attempted a AA treatment with great results. Many of the stains lifted but they ultimately returned as I couldn’t keep up with sequestering. At the end of the season I hired a pool company to drain and acid wash the pool. Lots of the stains were removed but there are many stubborn stains and streaks in the deep end.

As I opened the pool two weeks ago I decided to do another AA treatment using 3-4 lbs of ascorbic acid. I then drained the pool. As I was draining it I worked on some stains directly with AA and also MA with mixed results. Some lifted but most did not. I also dumped in a bottle of Jack’s blue for food measure. No effect.

I finished the drain and refilled the pool only to decide to try again thinking maybe I didn’t put enough AA since some stains did lift with AA applied directly;. this time I added about 6-7 lbs and I’m about 12 hours in. The stains don’t seem to be budging. I have noticed some stains turning black which I believe indicates copper but the majority just continue to be reddish/brown.

I do believe the plaster finish is at or near the end of its life as I can see concrete in some spots. Perhaps it’s a lost cause at this point?

I’m mostly stumped and wondering if I should just give up or try a no drain acid wash, and then drain and refill.

Any and all advice would be very welcomed 🙏

Here are pictures after AA last summer. The stains returned as I couldn’t keep up with sequestering.

Here is after drain and acid wash. The deep end honestly looked worse to me than the results from the AA treatment as there are many brown/red spots.
