Hi! We just purchased a property with this pool. 23k salt water gunite pool. 18yrs old. I’m not sure if it’s ever been resurfaced. The steps in particular have these stains on them. They’re tan in color, raised, gritty and hard. They don’t come off. I’m leaning toward having the whole pool resurfaced. Any idea what they are? Calcium deposits? Is there anything I can do to get rid of them or do I just need to resurface?

Ph 7.7 (has consistently been high in the 8s)
Alkalinity 120
Fc 3.5
Cya 50
Calcium 375.

Thank you!

You'll find more info on stains in Pool School, but try some vitamin C in a sock. You can grind up plain white tablets, or go to a health food store and buy powdered form (Vitamin C aka ascorbic acid). Put the powder in an old sock, bunch it up around the powder, then hold it against the stains for a minute. See if that changes the look. If the brown reduces, then you can be fairly sure that it's iron. You may be able to remove all or most of it that way.
