trimmed my solar cover to fit, a couple of inches smaller than the pool. The return on one end of the pool is pointed sort of toward the surface of the pool, and is causing it to bunch up on that end. Is it as simple as just rotating the jet on the return to point down a bit?

Yup. While covered you don't need surface movement as you aren't skimming.

If you have a VS pump you can also lower the RPMs if the other functions you need (swg/heater/ etc) still work with it lowered and see if that stops pushing it.

thanks! No VS pump, but I do leave the pump on 24/7. Rotating the directional eye from the return should be ok, even when not covered, yes?

Welp. That depends. If you are open for a one hour swim, it's not worth the trouble. If you are open for a long weekend, you'll want your skimming back.
