So... CC hovering right at about 0.5... what's up with that?

I've been testing a bit obsessively since we fired the pool guy. I've been working to get my TA down a bit and to figure out what my SWG should be running at....

But i noticed that I never get 0 CC.... I thought this may be due to having my cover on most/all day.... so the lst 3 days I've pulled the cover at around noon, and replaced it at about 6pm

I generally test at around 4pm when i get off work.

What would be causing the persistent CC?

Hey Todrick and Welcome !!!

Are you guys swimming yet ? Even fresh from the shower people are still gross on a molecular level.

I imagine you don't have much debris falling in the pool in Arizona.

And you are opening your cover to let the pool breath so that's not it. Usually it outgasses quick, like in a matter of minutes.

So its either swimmers or a trace of algae leftover from the people who you hired to care for your pool who didn't. Nobody will care for your pool like you will. And you have us to show you how. Do the Overnight Chlorine Loss Test like OLY mentioned and we'll go from there.

I've wondered how pink the sample should be after adding the R0003 to be considered having combined chlorine. When I immediately add 5 drops, the sample always turns a very, very light pink. Like almost not even noticeable. Another drop of 871 turns it back to clear but I feel like it's less than .5ppm cc given how light pink it is.

Does yours turn a full pink color or similar to mine where it's almost unnoticeable?

CC of 1ppm or above is an indication you may have a contaminant in your water putting an increased load on your FC sanitizer.
You can further diagnose your situation with an OCLT. It is not unusual to see a slight pink hue after a few minutes of letting the FAS-DPD test sample sit for a few minutes after reaching a clear endpoint.
After adding the R0003 if you get a slight pink and it clears again after 1 drop of 871 on a 10 ml test sample then your CC is 0.5ppm or less. Smile life is good.

Also, I think(?) if you get your endpoint wrong on the first FC test (i.e. it's clear but 1 drop away from actually clear) then you're more likely to read CC and that would also explain why it's always 0.5 CC too - it's the last drop from the FC test coming back for a second shot!

I may be entirely wrong though on how the two interact.

We are swimming

use the spa every night and swim 2-3 times a week

I hdnt even thought of human filth. lol

also, we do get a lot of small flowers from Palo verde and mesquite trees the HOA was so “kind” as to plant on the outside of our view fence… plus a good deal of dirt/dust from wind storms…. Thus the desire to keep the cover on when not in use

this is all really good info, thanks.

It turns about the same shade of pink that the FC test does when I’m down to the last drop before it turns clear.

pretty confidently 0.5 in my book
