I have followed the SLAM method multiple times in the past and it’s always proceeded as I would expect. This time it has me baffled. Our pool was slimy and cloudy and FC was .5 so I started the process with CYA at 45. I started this all 6 nights ago. The water cleared up the first day and I passed the overnight chlorine test last night for the first time but the combined chlorine is still 2. We have a DE filter which we took apart and hosed down yesterday. Have vacuumed daily and just now swam in it and there are no slimy spots anywhere. Today after passing the overnight test it did fall from 20 to 17.5 over 7 hours (it doesn’t get any sunlight bc we have an auto cover). The CYA is down to 40 or less from backwashing so I’m confident we’re over the threshold. Thoughts? Just keep at this? It’s never taken me more than 3 days before.

Welcome to TFP! Please post some pics of your pool so we can see everything from different angles. I would also recommend leaving the cover pulled back and inspecting it later. Covers are prone to mold and algae, plus, the water needs some sunlight to purge the CCs that are accumulating.

Will post pictures in a little bit. In reading through other threads I realized I didn’t lower pH to the right range- it was 7.6 when I started. Could this be my issue? Can I adjust it now from what it was or do I need to lower the chlorine first and retest?

So in about 3 hours with no cover on FC dropped from 18 to 11 with CC still 1.5. I’m adjusting the pH now that the Cl is lower. I’m at wits end here. How does the loss keep varying so much?

Did you remove the main drain covers and scrub under them? Turn the pump off and do that.
Check the weir doors for algae in the foam.

I wouldn't obsessed about the cc level just yet. It's very possible the sub is still pulling junk from the water. It can fluctuate.

The FC drop overnight is more alarming, so we want to watch for any potential places algae could be. From the pics, the only places perhaps might be under the drain covers or behind a light if you have a large light niche. I'm not seeing anything else though.

I’m scrubbing in the grooves of the light- does the light need to be removed? How do I do that?

Yes, if it has a niche. Can you post the best picture you can of the light?

If it has a single screw at the 12 o'clock position, remove that screw, tilt the top out away from the side, and lift.
