Should you totally drain spa?

Is there a reason not to totally drain the spa?

I will still clear all return lines and blow out spa drain.

My my only concern is that totally emptying it won’t create an air lock. If that is the case should I leave some water in?

I was originally planning on lower below spa return and above light, somewhere near bench level.

Will add add a couple gallon containers for freeze protection.

Thoughts on leaving water in or totally draining?

I would keep water in the spa over the winter. Assuming the spa is all part of the pool (or not). You do not want this moving out of the ground, no matter what. My friend has a spa, and we take all the water out, besides the drain part (about 1 foot). I clear out the lines empty as not to get soaked as I would be literally in the spa, and then we trap air in the suction side. Then quickly, once closed, we fill back up to about the level of the bottom of the skimmer as it will fill up again. You could drop antifreeze in the bottom, which will fill the suction side back up and if valve closed, no problems at all, but I would fill back up.
