I think techguy meant a trichlor (tablet) floater ... that is not a bad idea to slowly add the CYA and FC to the pool while you are waiting for it to fill up. Need to be sure that it does not sit against the side or it could fade it.
So how much do you think I would need/how many tablets to put in the floater? And what would I do if I reach 30 CYA level before its full? Stop the trichlor and start using bleach as long as CYA level stays at 30? Or just stop adding chlorine altogether until its full? Forgive my ignorance, I have read pool school once the other day, and I need to read a couple more times!
That would work ... just be sure there is not copper if you find something different.
Each 8 oz puck will add about 2.2ppm of CYA. That entire 3.5 bucket would only add about 16ppm of CYA. They dissolve very slowly so I doubt you would even get through the bucket. Keep an eye on the FC level as you may still need to supplement with some bleach.
If somehow you manage to add 7 lbs of pucks before the pool is full ... then switch to bleach only so the CYA does not climb more.
If you got to Poolcalculator.com, you can see how many pounds of "trichlor" you can add to get 30CYA for the number of gallons in your pool when full. You know the item you are buying is trichlor is it says "Trichloro-s-triazinetrione"
In my 10K pool, trichlor adds 5.5CYA PER POUND. So I could add about 5.5 pounds of pucks before I need to stop using pucks (30CYA) and convert to liquid chlorine.
