Second return

I have seen some information on this topic, but can’t find specifics. I am hard plumbing my pool before opening this season, and decided to add a second return. I measured the return and it appears to be 2 3/8. What size hole do I drill into the steel wall? I have seen 3 inches and 2 1/2, is there a standard hole size for the return on an above ground pool?

I would decide which return you are going to use and then lookup the install guide from the mfg. Here is the typical Hayward return for an AGP. For the Hayward a 2 3/8” hole will work. Be careful not to tear the liner.
